Interesting Businessweek Article

...a growing number of America's most powerful bosses have become vegan. Steve Wynn, Mort Zuckerman, Russell Simmons, and Bill Clinton are now using tempeh to assert their superiority. As are Ford Executive Chairman of the Board Bill Ford (F), Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, venture capitalist Joi Ito, Whole Foods Market (WFMI) Chief Executive Officer John Mackey, and Mike Tyson. Yes, Mike Tyson, a man who once chewed on human ear, is now vegan. His dietary habit isn't nearly as impressive as that of Alec Baldwin, though, who has found a way to be both vegan and fat at the same time...

Adopt an Omnivore

FC Herbivores wants to offer a program in which we link people who are interested in transitioning to a vegetarian/ vegan diet with a veggie/ vegan for guidance, answering questions, and generally providing support. If you are interested in becoming a "Veg Mentor" please send me an email to let me know. I will need:
  • Your name
  • How you would like to be contact (e.g. phone, email, or I can provide you with the omnivore's information and you can contact them)
  • What your current diet is like (vegetarian, vegan, what have you)
  • What kind of people you are willing to mentor (for instance, if you're a vegan, will you be willing to respectfully support someone who is only interested in going vegetarian?)
We'll probably be inventing the details of the program as we go, but mostly my expectation is that you would be available to answer questions/ maybe provide recipes and restaurant recommendations/ generally be supportive over email. Nothing too time-intensive or intrusive, I hope.

We can start offering this program immediately, but certainly may not get any omnivores until our first public event (late summer/ fall???). It would be great for me to get a list of interested parties ahead of time, but don't expect big action just yet.

Email me with the details bulleted above at fortcollinsherbivores@gmail.com.

Thanks!

FC Herbivores' first meeting

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Thursday's meeting! It was great to meet all of you and to see that there is support and interest for the ideas of the Fort Collins Herbivores in this community. We will advocate for a plant-based diet for the good of the environment, human health, and non-human animals.

For now, we will move forward with some simple events such as:
  • Documentary screenings
  • Adopt an Omnivore Program
  • Recipe Swap. Get started now. Post to our blog!
In the future we will look at larger endeavors including:
  1. Multi-week campaigns such as:
  • Addressing Hunger (Members of the community pledge to give up meat for one meal, one day, one week, etc. and FC Herbivores members donate an equivalent in vegetables to the Larimer Food bank).
  • Personal Health/ Weight Loss (Members of the community pledge to give up meat for one meal, one day, one week, etc. and FC Herbivores members calculate the calorie savings from each bit of meat substituted for vegetables).
  • Adopt a Farm Animal (Members of the community pledge to give up meat for one meal, one day, one week, etc. and, once the equivalent of a whole chicken, pig, or cow etc. has been spared, FC Herbivores members will "Adopt" said animal from an agreed upon sanctuary).
  • Save the Planet One Bite at a Time (Members of the community pledge to give up meat for one meal, one day, one week, etc. and FC Herbivores members calculate the CO2e emissions and water savings from their actions).
2. Speakers!
  • Vegan athletes
  • The Plant-Based Diet: Myth Versus Fact
  • Farmer Brown (http://www.farmsanctuary.org/actionalerts/AFB_tour.htm)
  • And More:)
3. Cooking Classes

Certainly more ideas and projects to come.

Thank you again to everyone who has shown support to make FC Herbivores a reality!
